Chief Van House Historic Site

During the 1790s, James Vann became a Cherokee Indian leader and a wealthy businessman. He established the largest and most prosperous plantations in the Cherokee Nation, covering 1,000 acres of what is now Murray County.

Description:

Federal-style brick mansion, known as “Showplace of Cherokee Nation,” built 1804 by Chief James Vann. Features cantilevered staircase and Cherokee hand carvings. Site of educational meetings between Cherokees and Moravian missionaries.

Tuesday-Saturday 9AM-5PM; Sunday 2-5:30PM Last tour begins 45 minutes before closing (gates locked). Closed Monday (except holidays), Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Closed Tuesday when open Monday.
