History, Museums, Southern Culture. The historic city of Augusta, a central location in Georgia's participation in the American Revolution, has a wealth of museums and historic sites that celebrate the region's past and give it relevance for today. Among those are Augusta Museum of History, Augusta Arsenal at Augusta State University and Meadow Garden House Museum. Augusta Canal Interpretive Center helps visitors see the relationship between Augusta and the Savannah River. Revolutionary War soldiers are buried in the Revolutionary Cemetery in Louisville. During the Civil War, one of General Sherman's headquarters locations was what is now the Brown House Museum in Sandersville. Visitors can learn a little about what the Civil War was like in Georgia by visiting the Callaway Plantation where they can pick cotton, take a plantation tour, and see how farm tools and supplies were made or grown. Think you might have had ancestors in the American Revolution or Civil War in Georgia? Look them up in the Washington County Genealogical Museum and Research Center.
