Northeast Georgia Mountains

From hiking the Appalachian Trail to shopping the Swiss Alpine look-alike village of Helen, from scenic waterfalls to art galleries, from canoeing the Chattahoochee or the Chattooga to all-you-can-eat family-style dining at the Dillard House; if you like your travel and recreation experiences packaged in beautiful mountain scenery, Northeast Georgia is the place for you.

Accommodations and Lodgings. From Alpine Hilltop Haus Bed & Breakfast to Whitworth Inn, the Northeast Georgia Mountains Region has a place to stay that matches your personal taste and travel budget.

Restaurants. The Dillard House in Clayton sets the bar for all-you-can-eat family-style dining in the mountains.

State Parks. Some of the top outdoor experiences in the mountains, including hiking, mountain biking and camping are found at Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites and Conservation Areas, including Moccasin Creek State Park, Bobby Brown State Park, Richard B. Russell State Park & Golf Course, Hart State Park, Unicoi State Park and Lodge, Smithgall Woods Conservation Area and Lodge, Black Rock Mountain State Park, Tallulah Gorge State Park, Traveler's Rest Historic Site, Vogle State Park, Watson Mill Bridge State Park, Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge, Tugaloo State Park, Victoria Bryant State Park and Golf Course and Fort Yargo State Park.

Outdoors. Hiking, canoeing and rafting, rock-climbing, fishing, and horseback riding are a few of the outdoors activities that you will discover in the Northeast Georgia Mountains. For the beginning fisherperson or the family fishing for dinner, there's Cedar Mountain Trout Farm, Goose Creek Trout Ponds, Riverside Trout Farm, Andy's Trout Farm, Rainbow Ranch, Hickorynut Cove Trout Farm, and Upper Hightower Trout Farm. Fisherpeople with more experience (or time) will be drawn to Lake Nottely, Lake Burton, Lake Hartwell, Lake Rabun, Lake Seed, Lake Tugaloo, Tallulah Falls Lake, and Richard B. Russell Lake. One of the most popular mountain pleasures for those with an adventurous spirit is canoeing or rafting (or tubing) a Georgia whitewater stream. A wide range of guides and outfitters provide trips, rentals and shuttle services including: Nantahala Outdoor Center, Southeastern Expeditions, Wildwater Ltd, Wildwood Outfitters, Cool River Tubing, Appalachian Outfitters River Trips, Broad River Outpost, Tallulah Point Overlook and Tallulah Adventures, Happy Trails Shuttle & Guide Service, and Nottely River Campgrounds. Saddle up and take a horseback ride at A Step Above Stables, Trackrock Stables, Sunburst Stables, Montara Farm, Sunny Farms, Dillard House Stables, or Gold City Corral and Carriage Company. Is a horse a little too traditional? Try a Crystal River Ranch Llama Trek. A little lite on all of the outdoor skills? Connect to the ancient skills and lore of Native Americans at Medicine Bow Ltd.

Museums, History, Culture. A wide range of museums, educational centers and experiences bring mountain history and culture to life. A few of them are Misty Mountain Train Museum, Mountain Life Museum, Old Courthouse Museum, White County Historical Museum, and that cultural Mecca of the North Georgia Mountains, Dawsonville Pool Room where Bill Elliott memorabilia is on display. There are many others. Northeast Georgia's Dahlonega was the location of America's first gold rush in 1828, and visitors can re-live part of that frontier history by panning for gold and gems at Gold n Gem Grubbin Mine, Consolidated Gold Mine, Crisson Gold Mine, and Duke's Creek Mine.

Attractions, Family Fun. For pure fun without having to put a saddle on a horse's back or a backpack on your own, the mountains have plenty to offer with attractions like Horne's Buggy Rides, Southern Tree Plantation, Bradley's Pumpkin Patch and Christmas Tree Farm, Burt's Farm, Kangaroo Conservation Center, Uncle Shuck's Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch, Atlanta Falcons Headquarters and Training Facility, I.N.K.-Interactive Neighborhood for Kids, Alpine Amusement Park, Black Forest Bear Park and Reptile Exhibit, Charlemagne's Kingdom, Haunted Helen, Helen Speedway, Helen Tubing & Waterpark, Fancy Feather Farms, and Rollins Planetarium.

Vineyards and Wineries. Crane Creek Vineyards, Habersham Winery, Persimmon Creek Vineyards, Frogtown Cellars, Montaluce Winery & Estates, Three Sisters Vineyards & Winery, Wolf Mountain Vineyard, Chateau Elan Winery & Resort, BlackStock Vineyards and Winery, Tiger Mountain Vineyard and Winery, and Georgia Wines, Inc. Tasting Room are among the vineyards, wineries and tasting rooms that have added a new reason to visit the mountains and are helping to bring wider recognition to the quality of Georgia-produced wines.

Auto and Motorcycle Racing. Hiking is just one method of transportation in the mountains. Another is auto and motorcycle racing at some high-speed tracks, including Road Atlanta and Panoz Racing School, Lanier National Speedway, Atlanta Dragway and Peach State Speedway.

Shopping. There's great shopping in the mountains for products and food that have a distinctive mountain heritage and taste, including Jaemor Farms, Logan Turnpike Mill, Old Clarksville Mill, BabyLand General Hospital, Baker's Creek Grist Mill, The Gourd Place, Old Sautee Store & Museum, Sautee Nacoohcee Center, Blue Bell Gallery, Nora Mill Granary, ArtWorks Artisan Center, Hillside Orchard Farms Country Store, and Farm Adventure. Folk pottery and folks buying pottery are long-standing traditions in the Georgia mountains and that tradition continues at Hickory Flat Pottery, Mark of the Potter, Hewell's Pottery, Turin Pottery, Georgia Folk Pottery Center, and the Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia.
