South Central Georgia
This is the home of the world famous Vidalia onion and the mighty Altamaha River. Explore via a driving or walking tour available at one of the region's convention and visitors bureaus or chambers of commerce and experience its rich agriculture heritage with a visit to one of its farms.
Accommodations and Lodgings. The historic Statesboro Inn & Restaurant in Statesboro, the Page House in Dublin, and the Parker House Inn in McRae are examples of the welcoming bed and breakfast inns in the South Central travel region. State parks provide lodging and camping facilities. Try Little Ocmulgee State Park and Lodge.
Driving and Walking Tours. Pick up a printed guide from the Downtown Development Authority and take a Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Dublin.
Attractions, Family Fun. Claxton is the home of Claxton Fruit Cake and Georgia Fruit Cake Company; both are open for tours. Visit Fallen Star Ranch to see more than 80 miniature horses. For agritourism and farm experiences that will be fun for the entire family, take a Farm Tour to learn how various crops are grown. Pecan Orchard Plantation provides hayrides, corn and oat mazes and a petting zoo on a working farm. The Lamar Q. Ball Jr. Raptor Center is the home of many birds of prey and reptiles. Splash in the Boro is a kids friendly water park that provides a day of family fun.
Outdoors: Hunting, Canoeing, Kayaking, Rafting. CanoeCanoe Outfitters will guide you on the waters of South Georgia, including the Okefenokee Swamp. Three Rivers Expeditions provides canoe and kayak rental as well as guiding services and good advice. Visit Lake Mayers, a 170-acre lake with boating, swimming and water sports. Pointer Plantation is a 700-acre hunting preserve with quail, dove and deer.
Natural Areas. See 300-year-old longleaf pines and a 600-year old tupelo cypress at Moody Forest Natural Area. Tour Georgia Southern Botanical Garden and see A. Randall Tuten Environmental Park with 20 acres of streams, wetlands, ponds and a floating dock.
Museums, History, Culture. Learn about the history of the region at the Dublin-Laurens Heritage Center, the Hazelhurst Historical Museum, and the Jefferson Davis Memorial State Historical Site. See a 26-foot fossil of a prehistoric Mosasaur and North America's oldest whale fossil at Georgia Southern University Museum.
Shopping. Don't miss the Vidalia Onion Factory for gifts that will please your friends and family and delight their taste buds.
