Southwest Georgia

Sometimes this region of Georgia goes "undiscovered" by visitors and state residents who may think first about Atlanta, the Georgia Coast, or the Mountains when planning recreational adventures in the state; and that probably suites local resident fine because they can have all of the great resources in this part of the state to themselves. But here is a region rich in travel and recreation adventures that are awaiting "discovery."

Accommodations and Lodgings. You'll find a variety of accommodations from the Historic Coalson Plantation & Inn located on 40 acres in Thomasville to Commodore Bed and Breakfast in Bainbridge. State parks throughout the region provide cottages and camping as well as a broad range of other travel and recreation experiences. Try Seminole State Park.

Restaurants and Dining. Jimbo's Log Kitchen was founded in 1936 and quickly became a regional institution.

Driving Tours and Walking Tours. Get an overview of the region by taking one of the driving tours available. Examples include the Historic Driving Tour of Bainbridge or the Fitzgerald Architectural Treasures Tour; or get closer to the action with a walking tour of Fort Gaines.

Attractions, Family Fun. Sweet Grass is a working dairy farm that provides agritourism and farm experiences that are fun for the entire family. See Georgia's Granddaddy of agritoursim and farm experiences at the Agrirama in Tifton.

Outdoors Experiences: Hunting, Hiking, Canoeing, Kayaking, Rafting. This is quail hunting country. Live Oak Plantation offers quail and pheasant hunting as well as golfing and fishing. Quail Country Lodge and Conference Center provides hunting and wobble trap shooting, plus conference facilities. Many more hunting lodges and guides provide assistance and advice about hunting in the region. Canoe or kayak on the Flint River with the Flint River Outpost.

Museums, History, Culture. See a collection of Civil War memorabilia and rare battle relics at the Blue and Gray Museum in Fitzgerald. Learn about early settlers and the Civil War in the region at the Thomas County Museum of History.

Performing Arts. Swamp Gravy, the joyous, locally produced theater in Colquitt, transforms everyday occurrences of Southern life into drama, song and laughter. Find theater performances and other arts programs at the Colquitt County Arts Center.
